Hecuba

Euripides · c. 424 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

The Greek fleet is windbound on the Thracian shore with the captured Trojan women aboard when the ghost of Achilles demands Priam's daughter Polyxena as an offering at his grave; the same day brings the old queen word of the last son she had sent away for safekeeping to a Thracian ally. She petitions Agamemnon and is granted permission of a sort. Its two halves, a sacrifice and a revenge, made it one of the most read and imitated of the plays in the Byzantine and Renaissance schoolroom.
