Cyclops

Euripides · c. 408 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

Silenus and his satyrs, shipwrecked and enslaved in Sicily, are keeping the flocks of a one-eyed cannibal when Odysseus puts in for provisions and finds himself shut in the cave with his crew; wine, a false name and a sharpened stake follow. The satyrs promise to help and are conspicuously reluctant to do so. It is the only complete satyr play that survives, and therefore the sole direct evidence for the fourth play that closed a tragic tetralogy.
