The Man-Eater of Malgudi

R. K. Narayan · 1961 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Nataraj prints wedding invitations and letterheads in a quiet Malgudi press until a taxidermist takes over his attic, fills it with stuffed hyenas and tigers, pays no rent and cannot be argued with. The neighbourhood's mildness turns out to have no answer to a man who simply does as he likes, and the temple elephant is next on his list. Narayan said he built the book on the Bhasmasura legend, in which a demon's boon puts him beyond the reach of ordinary force.
