Malgudi Days

R. K. Narayan · 1943 CE · Short Story · Indian · Modernist

A postman who cannot bring himself to hand over a telegram, an astrologer working by the light of a passing vendor's flare, a blind beggar led by a dog, a talkative man who talks his way into trouble: short pieces from one small South Indian town, most of them first printed as a newspaper column in Madras. The people recur, the streets stay where they were, and the tone stays level whether the subject is a windfall or a death. The stories fixed Malgudi as a place readers could navigate before they had opened any of the longer books set there.
