Swami and Friends

R. K. Narayan · 1935 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Swaminathan is ten, at the Albert Mission School in a South Indian town called Malgudi, and his year is made of cricket, a headmaster's cane, a friend he loses to a better team and a nationalist procession he joins largely for the noise. Nothing in it is momentous and everything is, at that scale. Graham Greene read the manuscript after London publishers had turned it down, found it a publisher and shortened the author's name; the invented town would hold his fiction for the next fifty years.
