Bridge to Terabithia
A Virginia farm boy runs the cow pasture all summer to be the fastest in the fifth grade, and is beaten on the first day of term by the new girl next door. They take a rope hung from a crab apple tree, swing out over the creek behind the fields, and rule the wood on the far bank as a kingdom nobody else may enter. Paterson's Newbery winner has sat near the top of American banned-book lists ever since, for its language and its theology.
