Where the Red Fern Grows

Wilson Rawls · 1961 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A boy in the Depression-era Ozarks fills a baking-powder can with two years of bait and berry money and walks to town for a pair of redbone coonhound pups. He works them on the river bottoms night after night, chops down a giant sycamore to keep a promise, and takes them into the hills for a championship hunt. Rawls, who taught himself to write and burned his early manuscripts, produced the American boy-and-dog book most often assigned in class.
