The Outsiders
In an Oklahoma town split between greasers on the east side and Socs on the west, a fourteen-year-old orphan lives with his brothers and reads Gone with the Wind for its gentlemen. A late night in the park after the drive-in ends with a switchblade and a body in a fountain, and he and his friend take a freight out to an abandoned country church. Hinton wrote it at sixteen and used initials so reviewers would not dismiss a gang novel by a girl.
