Nothing Gold Can Stay

Robert Frost · 1923 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

Nature's first green is gold and the hardest hue to hold: the earliest leaf of a New England spring is a flower, and only for an hour, before leaf subsides to leaf and the same sequence runs down through Eden to any ordinary morning. Eight lines of three beats each, among the shortest Frost published. Its argument has travelled well beyond the anthologies, most familiarly through a paperback recited in an abandoned Oklahoma church.
