Home Burial

Robert Frost · 1914 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A woman stopped on the stairs keeps looking back through the window at the small family graveyard, and her husband, climbing toward her, at last makes her say what she is seeing. She turns on him for the talk he made about birch fences and wet weather on the day he came in from digging the grave with his own hands. Written after Frost and his wife lost their first child, and the most unsparing of the New England dialogues.
