Desert Places

Robert Frost · 1936 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

Snow falling and night falling fast in a field a traveller has looked into going past: the ground almost covered smooth with a few weeds and stubble showing last, the woods around it having it, all animals smothered in their lairs. The loneliness of the place includes him unawares and will be more lonely before it is less, a blanker whiteness with no expression, nothing to express. Frost sets the empty spaces between stars against something nearer home, and finds the scale of the comparison no comfort at all.
