Fire and Ice

Robert Frost · 1923 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

Some say the world will end in fire and some say in ice; a speaker who has tasted desire holds with those who favour fire, then allows that he knows enough of hate to rate ice a sufficient instrument. Nine lines, two rhymes, and a shrug where the apocalypse should be. Frost said the idea came out of an evening with the astronomer Harlow Shapley, whom he had asked how the world would end.
