Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Robert Frost · 1923 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A traveller halts his horse between a wood and a frozen lake on the darkest evening of the year to watch the snow fill up somebody else's trees, and the horse shakes its harness bells as if asking whether there is a mistake. The only other sound is the sweep of easy wind and downy flake. Frost said it arrived whole after a night spent writing something else, and it closes on a repetition readers keep taking for a death wish that he denied.
