Out, Out—

Robert Frost · 1916 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A buzz-saw snarls and rattles in a Vermont dooryard through an afternoon of stove-length sticks, with five mountain ranges one behind another in the sunset, and the boy working it is old enough to be doing a man's work and young enough to be glad of the half hour a man would count as saved. His sister comes out in her apron to say supper, and at the word the saw meets his hand. Frost took the incident from a Littleton newspaper report and the title from Macbeth.
