The Little Match Girl
On the last night of the year a barefoot child is still out selling matches, having sold none all day and being afraid to go home without money. She sits in the angle between two houses out of the wind and strikes one for the warmth, and in its flame sees a stove; each match she lights afterwards shows her something else. Andersen wrote it for an almanac in three days, from a picture of a girl holding matches.
