Grave of the Fireflies

Isao Takahata · 1988 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Firebombing leaves a fourteen-year-old and his small sister without a mother in the last months of the war, and when an aunt's charity curdles into resentment over rice they leave to keep house in a hillside shelter beside a pond. The fireflies they catch for light last one night. Takahata adapted Akiyuki Nosaka's 1967 story, which this archive does not hold, and made the film that is regularly named the least watchable great film ever animated.
