Twenty-Four Eyes

Sakae Tsuboi · 1952 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

In 1928 a young woman cycles out to the branch school on a cape of Shodoshima in the Inland Sea, wearing a Western suit the fishing village takes as an affront, and is handed twelve first-graders to teach. The years that follow bring economic collapse, colleagues arrested for dangerous thoughts, and a war that reaches into the class one child at a time. Tsuboi grew up on the island herself and wrote what became postwar Japan's standard reckoning of what militarism cost an ordinary classroom.
