Twenty-Four Eyes

Keisuke Kinoshita · 1954 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

A young teacher arrives on the island of Shodoshima in 1928 to take charge of twelve first-graders, and follows them across two decades as poverty, militarism and war reach their fishing village. Adapting Sakae Tsuboi's 1952 novel, Kinoshita made postwar Japan's defining anti-war elegy, mourning the era through a classroom rather than a battlefield.
