The Great Fire

In 1947 Aldred Leith, a British officer sent to Japan to assess the effects of the atomic bombs, meets a young Australian girl in Kure whose family is part of the occupation. Her brother is gravely ill, and the two begin a correspondence across the ruins and the years. Hazzard, born in Sydney and long resident in New York, won the 2003 National Book Award and the 2004 Miles Franklin.
