Ruined
In a bar and brothel at the edge of a Congolese mining town, the proprietor sells beer, bodies and safe passage to government soldiers and rebels alike, keeping both sides drinking and neither armed indoors. A travelling salesman brings her two girls nobody else will take, one of them a chief's daughter the militia have left unable to work. Nottage built the play from interviews with Congolese women in Ugandan refugee camps after setting out to adapt Brecht, and it won the Pulitzer in 2009.
