For Whom the Bell Tolls
Robert Jordan, an American demolitions man attached to a guerrilla band in the Sierra de Guadarrama, is given three days to blow a bridge in step with a Republican offensive he is not allowed to explain. The band's leader has lost his nerve, the young woman who attaches herself to Jordan carries what the Falangists did to her town, and snow falls at the wrong time of year. Title and epigraph come from John Donne's seventeenth Devotion; Hemingway had reported the war himself, on the Republican side.
