Hills Like White Elephants

Ernest Hemingway · 1927 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

An American and a girl called Jig wait forty minutes at a station in the Ebro valley for the express from Barcelona, drinking beer and then anis while she looks across the tracks at a line of white hills. He keeps telling her the operation is perfectly simple and that he would never make her do it; the word for the operation is never said aloud. The plainest demonstration of the theory of omission Hemingway claimed for his prose.
