In Our Time
Ernest Hemingway · 1925 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist
Nick Adams grows up on Michigan trout water, goes to the war and comes back, across fifteen stories cut apart by italic vignettes of bullfights, executions and the retreat from Thrace. The vignettes carry the violence the stories keep offstage, so that a young man fishing a burned-over river reads as someone managing what he will not say. Hemingway's first American book, and the place where the theory of omission is first worked out at length.
