Disabled

Wilfred Owen · 1920 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

A young man sits in a wheelchair in a park in a ghastly suit of grey, legless and sewn short at the elbow, waiting for dark while boys' voices carry over from the play park. Between then and now lie the town's lit dances, a girl's waist under his hand, and an evening when he was drunk enough to sign up for the kilt and the football crowd's cheer. Written at Craiglockhart in 1917, and among the bleakest things he left.
