All Quiet on the Western Front

Lewis Milestone · 1930 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A schoolmaster's patriotic lecture sends a class of German boys to enlist, and within weeks they are scrounging food, burying friends and learning from an older private how to read shellfire. Milestone ran the camera on a crane and a track parallel to the advancing lines, so the machine guns cut the men down in one continuous movement. Nazi supporters wrecked the Berlin screenings and it was pulled across much of Europe.
