One of Ours

Willa Cather · 1922 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Claude Wheeler is too fine for the Nebraska farm his father prospers on and not articulate enough to say so; the university term he wants is cut short, the marriage he makes goes cold, and the new machinery keeps arriving. When the country enters the war he enlists, crosses on a transport where influenza kills more of the men than any German will, and finds in the ruined villages of France the seriousness his own life had refused him. It took the Pulitzer Prize and was attacked at once by Mencken and by Hemingway for its soldier's-eye romance, a charge Willa Cather never answered in print.
