Neighbour Rosicky

Willa Cather · 1930 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Doctor Ed tells Anton Rosicky, sixty-five and never ill in his life, that his heart is bad and he must stay off the hayfork; Rosicky drives home through the snow past his own graveyard, entirely unalarmed, and begins working out how to make things easier for his sons. He had been a tailor in London and then in New York, hungry in one and comfortable in the other, and he came west because a city is no place to raise a family; his American daughter-in-law Polly finds the Czech household close and is the one person he means to reach. Written for a women's magazine the year after her father's death and collected in Obscure Destinies.
