Moortown
Thirty-four dated pieces written in the field and left unrevised record a Devon farm's year: a calf pulled alive out of a heifer at two in the morning, dehorning, a ewe that will not take her lamb, a tractor frozen to the ground. Three further sequences stand apart, among them Prometheus chained on his crag and Adam attended by nine birds. The farm poems were made alongside the poet's father-in-law and became elegies when he died.
