The Hawk in the Rain

Ted Hughes · 1957 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A man drags himself hock-deep across ploughland in a downpour while a hawk hangs still at the top of the wind, and elsewhere a jaguar goes round its cage as though the bars were the edge of the world. Between the animals stand the dead of the Somme, six young men photographed on a bank and all killed within six months of the shutter. Hughes's first collection, picked by Auden, Spender and Marianne Moore for a New York first-book award.
