Crow

Ted Hughes · 1970 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

God's own nightmare hatches a black bird that cannot be killed, and the sequence follows him through the creation, the garden and the crucifixion, eating whatever he finds and getting the story wrong on purpose. The serpent never tempted Eve, one piece insists; that was an invention of theology, and the truth is coarser. Written in the years after Sylvia Plath's death, abandoned unfinished, and the most contested thing Hughes published.
