Three Tales
A servant woman in Normandy gives fifty years of unnoticed devotion to other people's children and finally to a parrot; a medieval hunter told he will kill his parents leaves home to outrun the prophecy; a tetrarch under Rome is manoeuvred by his wife into a promise at a birthday feast. Flaubert wrote the three together — modern, legendary and biblical — as one demonstration that the same prose would carry any material at all. The middle tale came from a stained-glass window at Rouen, the last from the Gospel accounts of the Baptist's death.
