The Gospel According to Jesus Christ

José Saramago · 1991 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Contemporary

Joseph overhears the order to kill the children of Bethlehem, saves his own son and warns none of the other fathers, and the guilt outlives him in the boy. Grown, herding sheep and living with Mary Magdalene, Jesus meets God and the Devil in a boat on the lake and is told plainly what he is being kept for. Portugal's government struck the book from its European prize list for blasphemy, and Saramago left for Lanzarote.
