The Power and the Glory
In a Mexican state where the churches are shut and the clergy have married or been shot, one nameless survivor keeps moving: a drunkard with an illegitimate daughter who still hears confessions and says mass in barns for people who may inform on him. A young lieutenant with no faith and an exact conscience takes a hostage from each village to flush him out. Greene travelled Tabasco and Chiapas in 1938 and considered this the best of his books.
