Brighton Rock
Pinkie Brown is seventeen, runs a razor gang on the Brighton front, and has just had a newspaperman killed on a bank-holiday afternoon. A waitress at a Snow's teashop noticed enough to hang him, so he sets about courting her, while a loud and kindly woman who drank with the dead man decides on her own account to find out what happened. Greene's Catholicism enters his fiction here as a theology of damnation held literally by a boy who believes in nothing else.
