The Chase
A student who took part in the political killings of 1930s Havana bolts into a concert hall and folds himself into a seat while the Eroica plays, hunted by the comrades he named under torture. The telling crosses between him, the ticket-taker who is also a music student, and the woman whose room he fled, doubling back over the same few hours. Carpentier timed the whole book to the forty-six minutes of the symphony and thought it his most exacting piece of construction.
