The Lost Steps

Alejo Carpentier · 1953 CE · Novel · Caribbean · Contemporary

A musicologist grinding out advertising scores in New York takes a museum commission to collect primitive instruments at the headwaters of a South American river. Each stage upstream strips off a layer of history, from the capital to the frontier town to the mission to a settlement founded by a man who calls himself the Adelantado, until he is keeping house in something like the Neolithic. Carpentier drew the route from his own journeys up the Orinoco in 1947.
