Corpo de Baile

João Guimarães Rosa · 1956 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

Seven long stories in the same backlands: a small boy on an isolated homestead who reads the adults around him far more closely than they know; a herdsman's feast got up in the middle of nowhere to consecrate a chapel; a warning overheard on a hillside and carried across country by seven men in turn, each garbling and improving it until it comes back as a ballad. Cattle drives, courtships and long walks supply the frames, and the pieces are keyed to one another by songs, riddles and recurring names. Issued in two volumes in the same year as Rosa's novel and later broken into three, which is how it is now usually read.
