Roughing It

Mark Twain · 1872 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · Modern / American · Victorian

A young man goes west by overland stagecoach as secretary to his brother, and stays to try silver mining, timber speculation and newspaper work in the Nevada boom. Fortunes arrive and evaporate within a page, and the tall tale is treated as a form of reporting. The frontier recorded by someone who went broke on it rather than romanticised it from the east.
