The Mysterious Stranger

Three boys in an Austrian village meet a beautiful youth who can make people out of clay, shows them their futures, and regards human suffering with cheerful detachment. He calls himself Satan, and explains that the moral sense is the one faculty that makes cruelty possible. Left unfinished at its author's death and assembled by an editor who spliced two drafts and wrote part of the ending.
