Invitation to a Beheading

Vladimir Nabokov · 1936 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

A man is condemned for gnostical turpitude, an opacity of soul in a country where everyone else is transparent, and spends his last days in a fortress where nobody will tell him the date. His jailer, his lawyer and his wife's enormous family behave like actors who keep forgetting which part they hold. Written in a fortnight, and the one of his Russian books Nabokov said he loved best.
