The Other Shore
Gao Xingjian · 1986 CE · Play · Chinese · Contemporary
A company of actors hauls itself across a river on ropes and arrives on the far bank with no memory and no language, and a woman teaches them words before the crowd she has made articulate turns on her. What follows is a sequence of ordeals — a card game, a mother, a shadow that will not obey — in which the single figure is repeatedly absorbed back into the mass. Written as a training piece for actors and stopped in rehearsal.
