A Country Doctor

Franz Kafka · 1919 CE · Short Story · German · Modernist

A doctor is called ten miles out on a winter night with no horse, and two animals and a groom come up out of the disused pigsty in his own yard. He is carried to a farm where a boy first begs to be allowed to die and then holds him to the promise of a cure, and the villagers undress the doctor and lay him in the bed alongside the wound. It gave its name to the only collection Kafka ever assembled himself, which he dedicated to his father.
