The Judgment
A young merchant finishes a letter to a friend who went out to Russia and failed there, telling him at last about his own engagement and his prospering business. He carries the letter into his father's darkened room to mention it, and the old man begins by questioning whether the friend in Petersburg exists at all. Kafka wrote it straight through the night of 22 September 1912 and afterwards dated everything he valued in his own work from that one sitting.
