No Exit

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1944 CE · Play · French · Contemporary

A valet shows a journalist into a Second Empire drawing room with no windows, no mirror, no bed and lights that never go out, then locks the door behind him. Two women are brought in after him, and the three work out that they have been put together on purpose: each needs something from a person who wants nothing from them. Sartre's tightest hour of theatre and the source of the most quoted line in modern French drama.
