The Roads to Freedom

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1945 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

A philosophy teacher spends the last Paris summer before Munich trying to raise five thousand francs for his mistress's abortion, touching his brother, his students and a veteran of the Spanish war while insisting that he remains a free man. Later volumes open out to the mobilisation and the collapse of 1940, cutting between a dozen lives held in the same hours. Sartre's unfinished cycle, putting existential freedom under the weight of history.
