Kosla
Bhalchandra Nemade · 1963 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary
Pandurang Sangvikar, sent from a Khandesh village to college in Pune on his father's money, gives an account of four years of hostel rooms, mess committees, borrowed books and examinations he cannot be bothered to sit. He talks the whole novel in the offhand spoken Marathi of a young man who finds every institution on offer — family, degree, marriage, the nation — not worth the effort of joining. Written at speed when Nemade was twenty-five, it broke the language open for a generation and became the founding text of the deshivad he later argued for.
