Lives of Girls and Women

Alice Munro · 1971 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Del Jordan grows up on the Flats Road outside Jubilee, Ontario, in the war years, between an uncle who keeps snapping turtles in a washtub and a mother who sells encyclopedias door to door and writes to the paper about the emancipation of women. School, the churches, an operatic aunt, a first job and a Baptist boy each get their turn at her. Munro's only book-length work, and a portrait of the artist insisting the ordinary is worth the trouble.
