Runaway

Alice Munro · 2004 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Contemporary

A young woman runs a failing riding stable in rural Ontario with a husband whose moods she manages hour by hour; it has rained for weeks and the white goat that follows her everywhere has gone missing. The widowed classics teacher up the road works out that a bus leaves for Toronto in the afternoon and that she can pay for the ticket. One of the late Munro stories most often set on courses, and the title piece of the collection that consolidated the case for the 2013 Nobel.
