Floating Clouds
Yukiko, a typist posted to the wartime forestry service in the highlands of French Indochina, takes up there with Tomioka, a married technician, and is repatriated to a Tokyo of burnt lots, black markets and cheap rooms where she seeks him out and finds him willing neither to leave his wife nor to let her go. She moves between an American serviceman, a cousin who assaulted her years earlier and now runs a new religion of his own, and Tomioka again, following him to whatever work he can still get. Hayashi finished it months before her death, and it is taken as the major achievement of a writer who came up out of itinerant peddling to become the most widely read woman in Japanese letters.
