Ve Din

Nirmal Verma · 1964 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

An Indian student boarding through the winter in Prague, in a city where everyone he knows is also a foreigner passing through, falls in with a woman who has left a marriage behind her in another country. They spend the season in cafés, borrowed rooms and the snow outside town, both aware that visas and term dates have already settled how long any of it lasts. Verma spent a decade in Czechoslovakia, and the Hindi prose he brought back — weather, silence, the statement withheld — made him the central stylist of the Nayi Kahani generation.
